MORAL VALUES, A MECHANISM FOR AN IDEAL SOCIETY- PROF. ARIGBABU

Inculcating and imparting moral values into learners right from elementary stage to higher education level has been described as a major mechanism for a better and enviable society.

The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu made this known during the visit of Yoruba Council of Youth Worldwide, Ogun State Chapter in his office at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

Prof. Arigbabu said Yoruba culture and tradition is rich, reliable, and best way of guiding a child to the right path in life, saying any child that is properly brought up with good morals would become a worthy leader of tomorrow.

He advised people to always speak ‘Yoruba’ to their children at home and stop referring to it as a vernacular, noting that failure to embrace the language, culture and tradition would make the Yoruba language go into extinction.

"Yoruba language seems to be going into extinction because all of us have relegated it to the background since we have consciously or unconsciously referred to it as vernacular in school. Whatever we can do to promote Yoruba language and culture, we are ready to do it", Arigbabu said.

In his speech, the State Chairman of the Council, Omoluabi Sunday Adebowale stated that the purpose of the visit was to seek the permission of the government for the establishment of Omoluabi School Club in all secondary schools across the State and to propagate the acceptance of Yoruba culture and tradition which is germane for the peace, security and co-existence of people.

Speaking, the Commandant, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), College of Security Management, Abeokuta, Dr. (Mrs.) Susan Awonusi submitted that Omoluabi School Club if established would help in championing the course of moral behaviour, such as good dressing, respect for the elders and how to address people politely.,
