El-Rufai becomes political orphan in Kaduna as APC backs probe of ex-governor’s administration

The Kaduna State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) have thrown their weight behind the move by the state’s House of Assembly to probe the financial activities, particularly loans obtained by the administration of former Governor Nasir El-Rufai.

Kaduna APC Publicity Secretary Salisu Wusono welcomed the probe, describing it as a positive step towards clarifying the financial situation inherited by the incumbent government.

Wusono emphasized the party’s commitment to the rule of law and the welfare of Kaduna State residents, highlighting the need for transparency and accountability in governance.

“Despite the huge debt burden of $587m, N85bn, and 115 Contractual Liabilities sadly inherited from the previous administration, we remain resolute in steering Kaduna State towards progress and sustainable development.

“We have conducted a thorough assessment of our situation and are sharpening our focus accordingly,” he told Punch.

Similarly, the Kaduna State chapter of the NLC voiced support for the investigation, urging the Assembly to delve into unpaid severance packages for over 32,000 workers sacked during El-Rufai’s tenure.

NLC Chairman Ayuba Suleiman underscored the importance of addressing workers’ welfare and adherence to labour laws, advocating for a thorough examination of the circumstances surrounding the mass layoffs.

During a special session presided over by Speaker Alhaji Yusuf Liman, the Assembly unanimously resolved to establish a fact-finding committee to investigate the loans and financial transactions of the past administration.

The motion, moved by Yusuf Mugu, representing the Kaura constituency, highlighted the importance of transparency and accountability in public finance management.
