Niger flooding: 115 bodies recovered, 300 houses submerged



Residents of Mokwa, the headquarters of Mokwa Local Government Area on Thursday claimed that 115 bodies have been recovered from the flooding which ravaged the community.


Also, Abdullahi Arah, the Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency who confirmed the growing figure said over 30 houses were submerged and destroyed due to the flood incident.


Arah said the incident which occurred on Thursday has left many residents of the Mokwa community displaced and facing severe harsh conditions due to the loss of their homes and family members.


However stating that a search and rescue operation was ongoing, Arah said several residents of the area are yet to be accounted for by the agency in collaboration with the leadership of the community.


A resident who spoke on the unfortunate incident said grief and despair had enveloped the Mokwa community since the flooding incident happened.


In some instances, entire family members were said to have been wiped out by the flood.


Counting their losses, the resident said several commercial vehicles and travellers who stopped over for prayers or to pass the night before the incident ravaged the community were heavily affected.


The resident also stated that some of these travellers have also not been identified by authorities.
