Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, appeared together on Saturday at the burial ceremony of Wike’s uncle, Elder Temple Omezurike Onuoha, in Rumuepirikom, Rivers State.
The development comes barely two days after their reconciliation brokered by President Bola Tinubu.
Speaking to journalists after the closed-door peace meeting held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Thursday, Wike confirmed that both sides had reached a final resolution to end months of political hostilities.
“We have all agreed to work together with the governor, and the governor also agreed to work together with all of us. We are members of the same political family,” Wike said.
He acknowledged that the crisis had dragged on for several months but described the agreement as “conclusive.”
The political fallout between Wike and Governor Fubara began shortly after Fubara assumed office in May 2023.
Tensions escalated in October when lawmakers loyal to Wike in the Rivers State House of Assembly initiated impeachment proceedings against the governor.
In retaliation, Governor Fubara demolished the Assembly complex following a suspicious fire, forcing legislative sittings to relocate to temporary quarters.
The prolonged power tussle led President Tinubu to intervene in December 2023, leading to a peace deal that saw Fubara concede several political appointments to Wike’s camp.
However, the truce broke down, reigniting the conflict.
On March 18, 2025, Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, suspending Governor Fubara’s executive powers for an initial period of six months.
A sole administrator, former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (retd.), was subsequently appointed to oversee the state’s affairs.
Friday’s event in Rumuepirikom marks the first public appearance of both Wike and Fubara together since the renewed presidential intervention.
Also in attendance at the burial ceremony were the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martins Amaewhule, and other allies of Wike.
