BACKGROUND
Muhammadu Buhari (born December 17, 1942, in Daura, Katsina State) is a retired Major General of the Nigerian Army who twice held Nigeria’s highest office—first as military Head of State (1983–1985) and later as democratically elected President (2015–2023).
Early life & education: Buhari attended Katsina Provincial Secondary School and later Katsina Teachers’ College. He enlisted in the Nigerian Army in 1961 and trained at the Nigerian Military Training College (now NDA), as well as at military institutions in India and the United Kingdom.
Military career: Rising through the ranks, he saw action in the Nigerian Civil War (1967–1970), held various command and staff positions, and was appointed Federal Commissioner (Minister) for Petroleum and Natural Resources in 1976.
First tenure (1983–1985): After a military coup on December 31, 1983, Buhari became Head of State, emphasizing an “War Against Indiscipline” campaign, strict anti–corruption measures, and currency austerity. His government was overthrown in August 1985 by General Ibrahim Babangida.
Return to civilian life & politics: Following retirement from the military, Buhari contested the presidency three times (2003, 2007, 2011) under different parties, building a reputation for personal integrity and anti‑corruption advocacy.
Second tenure (2015–2023): Elected on a platform of fighting corruption, boosting security, and reviving the economy, Buhari defeated incumbent Goodluck Jonathan in March 2015. He was re‑elected in 2019. His administration prioritized counter‑insurgency against Boko Haram, budget reforms, and social‑intervention programs, but faced criticism over economic challenges and human‑rights concerns. He handed over to President Bola Tinubu on May 29, 2023.
