Roads Deserted Across Lagos as LG Polls Begin

Major roads across Lagos State, including the usually busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and Alausa-Secretariat axis, were deserted on Saturday morning as residents observed the local government elections.

The calm followed a directive by the Lagos State Police Command announcing a total restriction of vehicular movement from 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. as part of security measures for the election day.

The polls, held today, July 12, 2025, are taking place across the 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) of the state.

Election materials were confirmed to have arrived at various polling units early Saturday.

A total of 139 candidates from 10 political parties are contesting for the 57 chairmanship positions. Additionally, 842 councillorship candidates from 14 political parties are vying for 376 legislative seats across the 376 wards in Lagos.

According to documents from the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), 15 out of the 19 parties that initially showed interest eventually submitted candidate lists for the election.

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is the only political party fielding candidates for all 57 chairmanship and 376 councillorship positions, making it the most represented in the contest.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is fielding candidates in 45 local councils and 259 wards, while the Labour Party has 22 chairmanship and 130 councillorship candidates.

Other parties with candidates approved by LASIEC include the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), Accord, African Action Congress (AAC), Action Alliance (AA), Allied People’s Movement (APM), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Social Democratic Party (SDP), National Rescue Movement (NRM), Young Progressive Party (YPP), Youth Party (YP), Action Peoples Party (APP), and African Democratic Congress (ADC)
