Farmers in Ijebuland have called for stronger collaboration among government, the private sector, and civil society to promote sustainable agricultural practices, ensure food security, and secure a better future for all.
The call was made during the celebration of World Food Day, organised by the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Ijebuland Chapter.
Speaking at the event, Chairman, AFAN Ijebuland, Mr. Niyi Atooromola emphasised that achieving food security and a sustainable future required collective effort across all sectors of the society.
"To achieve food security and a better future, we must work hand in hand, collaborating with the government, private sector, academia, civil society and within our communities,” he said.
Mr. Atooromola noted that Ijebuland, blessed with fertile soil, resilient people and a long history of agricultural excellence, if provided with an improved infrastructure and workable policies, then economic prosperity would be assured not just for Ogun State but for the nation at large.
“With the right policies, improved rural infrastructure, and the encouragement of agro-processing industries, we can transform these natural blessings into food security that will ensure economic prosperity,” he added.
He further urged local government authorities to strengthen partnerships with farmers’ associations, focus on building more farm-to-market roads, reviving irrigation systems and expanding agricultural extension services to bring modern knowledge and technology directly to farmers’ fields.
Also speaking at the event, Chairman, Ijebu-Ode Local Government, Hon Dare Alebiosu described agriculture as the backbone of the nation’s economy and a vital part of its heritage.
“Agriculture remains not just a means of livelihood but the foundation of food security, youth empowerment and sustainable development. At the local government level, we remain committed to supporting farmers through access to resources, modern techniques and enabling infrastructure,” he said.
In his remarks, Hon. Kolawole Jamiu Adebukanla, Member Ijebu ode Legislative Council and Chairman, House Committee on Agriculture, reiterated the importance of government support for farmers, describing them as the backbone of the nation.
