In every thriving democracy, equity serves not merely as a political courtesy but as a stabilizing cornerstone. The All Progressives Congress (APC), renowned for its foundations of fairness and inclusive governance, faces a troubling reality in Ogun State reality that has persisted for far too long. Despite decades of political evolution, one glaring injustice remains: no individual from the Ogun East Senatorial District, the Ijebu & Remo axis, has ever held the position of State Chairman. This absence is not merely an oversight; it's a structural exclusion that undermines the collective fabric of our party and the democratic principles that we espouse.
The political landscape is stark; since the formative days of the Action Congress (AC) through the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and into the APC, the chairmanship has rotated exclusively between Ogun Central and Ogun West. Ogun East the Ijebu and Remo axis has been conspicuously sidelined. Why does this matter? Because a party cannot sustainably thrive when one of its critical segments is left out of the leadership equation. The persistent marginalization of our region is a matter of historical record, and ignoring it signals to our loyal constituents that their sacrifices and support are taken for granted.
The Ijebu and Remo bloc has a long-standing history of supporting progressive politics, consistently voting for Awoist parties, ACN, and now APC. This loyalty should be rewarded, not taken for granted. The Ijebu nation has cultivated one of the most organized political structures in the South-West, complete with grassroots networks, leadership councils, and a politically informed electorate. Excluding our voice at the table not only alienates one of the party’s most fervent supporters but risks eroding the sense of belonging and loyalty among our electorate.
Political imbalance breeds discontent. A lack of equitable representation can precipitate disillusionment, leading to fragmentation and diminished voter turnout. We must be clear: this is not a cry for entitlement; it is a necessary appeal for fairness. The message is simple: “Your votes are welcome, but your seat at the table can wait.” If we do not correct this imbalance, we may find that the loyalty we once counted on will wane, leaving us vulnerable in crucial elections.
Zoning the next APC State Chairmanship to Ogun East is not just a moral imperative; it is also a strategic necessity. When one of the three major political blocs Ogun Central (Egba), Ogun West (Yewa/Awori), and Ogun East (Ijebu & Remo) is fundamentally sidelined, the party risks losing its coherence and effectiveness. When we embrace equity in our leadership structures, we strengthen internal cohesion and ensure grassroots ownership of our political vision.
The APC has set a commendable example at the national level by prioritizing balanced representation among diverse demographics. If such a principle is deemed appropriate for the Republic, it is high time that it permeates the state chapters as well. The youth and elders of the Ijebu nation are not asking for what is undeserved they are asking for what has never been granted, creating a more equitable and united party.
As the APC stands at the threshold of a renewed era of political consolidation and grassroots mobilization, we respectfully urge key players within the party, including the National Chairman, the National Working Committee, and the Zoning Committee, to address this glaring disparity. We ask that you listen to the voices of the Ijebu nation and act in accordance with principles that uphold justice and inclusiveness within the party.
Our message is clear, just and necessary.
