Three commuters have been reported dead in a road accident that occurred at Sango-Ota tollgate along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway on Wednesday.
According to DAILY POST, it was gathered that a Scania truck carrying wood with number plate GGE 681 XD, was descending the Dalemo slope to the tollgate area from Sango, inbound Lagos when it reportedly suffered brake failure.
The truck reportedly crushed the three commuters who were waiting at the bus stop before colliding with another empty truck registered as SMK 795 YF.
Confirming the incident, Public Relations Officer, Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, TRACE, Babatunde Akinbiyi, said the incident happened at about 9:05 pm.
He stated that the rescue team at the scene comprised TRACE, Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC and the Police.
Akinbiyi, while quoting an eyewitness, said, “The truck loaded with wood suffered brake failure and rammed into the vehicle in front of it. In the process, it tragically crushed the commuters who were attempting to board a bus at the Tollgate bus stop.”
Giving details about the victims of the crash, he said they were two males and one female, and their remains had been deposited at morgue of the General Hospital at Ifo.
He added that vehicular traffic was initially affected but with the intervention of TRACE operatives, it subsided after the evacuation and normalcy was restored for easy passage of vehicular and human movement.
Meanwhile, the TRACE spokesperson commiserated with the families of the deceased and cautioned owners and drivers of articulated vehicles to make sure their vehicles are in good shape before heading out or commencing on any journey.
