Abeokuta – Former Senator representing Ogun Central Senatorial District in the Fourth Republic, Senator Femi Okurounmu, has congratulated Senator Shuaib Afolabi Salisu on his emergence as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for Ogun Central following the party’s senatorial primary election.
Okurounmu conveyed his congratulatory message to Senator Salisu on Wednesday ,May 20, 2026, describing the APC candidate’s victory as deserving and a reflection of confidence in his leadership.
The elder statesman, politician, engineer and public intellectual represented Ogun Central Senatorial District in the Senate between 1999 and 2003 on the platform of the Alliance for Democracy (AD).
In his message addressed to Senator Salisu, Okurounmu expressed delight over the development and offered warm wishes on the outcome of the exercise.
He stated: “My distinguished Senator, CONGRATULATIONS. I learn that you have been nominated by your party to return to the Senate for a second term. I am gladdened by your success. CONGRATULATIONS! CONGRATULATIONS!! CONGRATULATIONS!!!”
Senator Salisu emerged as the APC candidate for Ogun Central Senatorial District after the party's primary election held on May 18, 2026, thereby positioning him to seek a second term in the Red Chamber.
The outcome of the primary election was announced by the Chairman of the Senatorial Primary Election Committee for Ogun State, Comrade Phillip Shuaib.
Senator Okurounmu remains one of Ogun State’s respected political figures with a long record of public service. He previously served as Ogun State Commissioner for Works and later as Secretary-General of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere.
Beyond his political engagements, Okurounmu played a key national role as Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee on National Dialogue appointed by former President Goodluck Jonathan, a process that laid the foundation for the 2014 National Conference.
Known for his advocacy for true federalism, constitutional restructuring and accountable governance, Okurounmu has remained a prominent voice in Nigeria’s political discourse.
His congratulatory message adds to the growing stream of endorsements and goodwill messages received by Senator Salisu following his victory at the APC senatorial primary.
