As the race for Ogun Central Senatorial District intensifies, the people deserve honest conversations about character, integrity, and track records — not mere rhetoric. One name that keeps returning to the centre of discourse is former Senator Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello. While some attempt to present her as a leader of conscience, the documented history of serious graft allegations raises fundamental questions about her moral compass and fitness for public office.

 *The 2008 Health Ministry Scandal* 

During her tenure as Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Health, Senator Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello was among top public officials charged by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over the alleged improper disbursement of public health funds. Prosecutors at the time accused officials of diverting hundreds of millions of naira meant for healthcare services. Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello was specifically linked to allegations of receiving ₦10 million in connection with the matter.

This scandal erupted at a critical period when President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua had declared a policy of **“zero tolerance”** for corruption and ordered the return of unspent funds to the national treasury. The Health Ministry controversy became one of the earliest high-profile anti-corruption cases of that administration. A Nigerian court had to entertain her bail application after she reportedly spent time in hiding before turning herself in. The case involved funds from a two-and-a-half million dollar government health budget, with accusations that she and others took about $85,000 in unspent funds.

These were not abstract figures — they represented money that could have been used to improve hospitals, procure drugs, and save lives across the country.

 *Pattern of Questions on Integrity* 

The former Senator has in recent times been vocal in questioning the integrity and sources of wealth of other political figures. Yet the same public expects accountability from everyone, including those who have faced EFCC charges and court proceedings related to public fund mismanagement. How does one who was at the heart of such a major health sector graft allegation presume to lecture others on moral standards?

Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello has consistently denied any wrongdoing, maintaining that the funds she received were for legitimate purposes. However, the mere fact that she was formally charged by the anti-graft agency, alongside former ministers, remains a significant stain that cannot be wished away. The case generated widespread public attention precisely because it involved the misuse of health funds meant for ordinary Nigerians.

 *Leadership and Public Trust* 

Integrity in leadership is not negotiable. It is the foundation upon which public trust is built. When a leader’s name is repeatedly associated with investigations into misappropriation of public funds, especially in a sensitive sector like health, it raises legitimate concerns about their moral compass and suitability for higher responsibility.

Ogun Central deserves a Senator whose record inspires confidence rather than constant reminders of past scandals. The people of the district have suffered enough from poor representation and broken promises. We cannot afford leaders whose tenures are forever linked to EFCC probes and court battles over public funds.

This is not about personal attacks — it is about facts, documented history, and the need for accountability. Before anyone positions herself as a champion of the people or questions the integrity of others, she must first confront and transparently address her own history with graft allegations.

The good people of Ogun Central are watching. They deserve better. They deserve leaders whose hands are clean, whose moral compass points true north, and whose records reflect genuine service rather than controversy.
