OGUN ASSEMBLY RESOLUTION ON INTRODUCTION OF SIGN LANGUAGE IN GOVERNMENT PROGRAMMES YIELDING RESULTS

The Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide, has described the progress recorded in the inclusion of sign language interpreters in government programmes as a significant outcome of the Assembly’s legislative intervention, reaffirming the Assembly's commitment to inclusive governance.

Elemide gave the description when the Chairman of the State chapter of the Association of Sign Language Interpreters of Nigeria, Comrade Ogunbanwo Oluwaseun, led members of the association on a courtesy visit on the Speaker at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

The association commended the Assembly for its resolution of 29th July, 2025; noting that it had resulted in measurable improvements in the acceptance and inclusion of sign language interpreters in government programmes.

The resolution, H.R. No. 132/OG/2025, titled: “Call for the Inclusion of Sign Language Interpretation in State Government Programmes to Promote Inclusivity for Persons with Hearing Impairment,” sought for the inclusion of certified sign language interpreters at executive, legislative and judicial public events to ensure equal participation for residents with hearing impairment.

In a related development, the Speaker also received the State Chapter of Wazobia Widows Welfare Association, led by its State Coordinator and spokesperson, Mrs. Adesola Oyebade, who sought the Assembly’s support and partnership for the forthcoming inauguration of its new executive members.

Oyebade appealed to the State Government, through the Assembly for more benefits and opportunities for widows, including a functional skills acquisition centre to equip them with practical skills and improve their economic independence.
