Sunday Adebisi, the son of the late ex-military officer, Israel Adebisi Akinbobola, who died on July 2, 2018 and was buried in September 2018, has cried out for protection, alleging that the Nigerian authorities failed to safeguard his family despite repeated reports to the police.
Speaking with our correspondent shortly after his father’s burial at Ojoo, Ibadan in November 2018, Sunday said he and his family had been living in fear following the killing of his father and an attack that left his mother seriously injured.
According to him, several reports made to the Ojoo Police Station yielded no result.
He said, “After my father was killed and my mother attacked, I reported the matter to the police, but nothing was done, I fear those behind my father’s murder might come after us, so I had to move my mother to Ondo State for safety.”
When our correspondent visited the Adebisi residence, the scene of the incident was described as gruesome. Neighbours and mourners at the burial expressed deep sorrow and anger over the growing insecurity in the country.
A guest at the funeral, who spoke on condition of anonymity, suspected to be a military personnel described the late Israel Adebisi Akinbobola as a dedicated soldier who served Nigeria faithfully.
“He had complained about threats from some unknown hoodlums after returning from service,” the guest revealed.
Further investigations two months later confirmed that the deceased officer’s wife and children had relocated to Ondo State to seek refuge.
Efforts by our correspondent to reach Sunday Adebisi for an update proved unsuccessful as his current whereabouts remain unknown.
At the Ojoo Police Station, it was gathered that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) who handled the initial investigation had since been transferred to Ogun State, and his contact could not be traced at the time of filing this report.
