NURSE'S ASSAULT: OGUN WADES INTO ALLEGATION OF MISCONDUCT

A panel of enquiry has been set up to look into the alleged assault on a Nurse by a Medical Officer, which occurred at the General Hospital, Ayetoro in Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State.

Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, disclosed this in a statement issued in Abeokuta, saying the government had swung into action to look into the matter of the alleged battery immediately it got wind of the information.

Coker said the present administration would not tolerate any harmful act from government officials, pointing out that the Public Service Rules frowned at assault, battery and other vices by workers who are expected to be good role models.

She called on members of the Nigeria Association of Nurses and Midwives (NANM) to sheathe their sword and cooperate with the government in its efforts to get to the root of the matter, saying “I urge the union to release its members to resume back to work while the government regret the shameful act. We should not let the innocent people of Ayetoro bear the brunt”.

The Commissioner also revealed that the alleged Medical Officer has been subjected to Gender-based violence evaluation, while the panel's investigation is ongoing.

"Two wrongs do not make a right. The case has been reported to us. We will not fold our arms to see misconduct, assault and other vices thrive in our health facilities.

"We have set up a panel of enquiry to look into the issue and report back to us without wasting time. I wish to assure you that necessary disciplinary action will be taken after the findings. I want to plead with unions and all concerned stakeholders to give the government the opportunity of doing a thorough investigation", she said.

Meanwhile, the Medical Director in the Hospital, Dr. Rahman Makun has urged members of staff to continue to render services to patients.

Dr. Makun made the plea in Ayetoro during an interview with OGIS correspondent, assuring that the hospital would not rest on its oars at ensuring qualitative healthcare delivery.
