FOOD SECURITY: OGSG PLANS TO UNVEIL BROILER GROWER SCHEME

 


          To further boost food security and supply through poultry farming, the Ogun State Government has revealed plans to establish effective synergy with big players to unveil Broiler Grower Scheme for better productivity in the poultry industry.


 Commissioner for Agriculture Development and Food Security, Hon. Bolu Owotomo disclosed this at the 12th Edition of Nigeria Poultry Show 2023, organised by the Nigeria Poultry Association of Nigeria, with the theme: ‘’Mitigating the Challenges of the Poultry Industry: Current Perspective, the Role of Government and the Private Sector", held at Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, noting that the project will be sighted at the Odeda Farm Institute and to be replicated across the State.


          Owotomo said the Scheme is a special intervention towards enhancing the poultry industry and improving the lots of poultry farmers, assuring that the present administration would not rest on its oars at preferring solutions to the lingering challenges confronting farmers in the subsector.


           While renewing the commitment of the Ministry to create an enabling environment for the sector to thrive, the Commissioner stated that more poultry farmers would be encouraged to form cluster farming with maize farmers, to ensure a regular supply of maize used in the production of feeds for the industry.


Owotomo affirmed that’’ the interest of the State government in poultry and poultry products has grown tremendously across the State under the leadership of Prince Dapo Abiodun towards improving productivity in poultry farming and its value chain.


The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mr. Samuel Adeogun, stressed the need to adhere to rules of engagement in poultry farming to maintain the industry standard.


 In her goodwill message, Lagos State Commissioner for Agriculture, Hon. Abisola Olusanya appreciated the organisers of the Poultry Show noting that government at all levels have critical roles to play in addressing the challenges confronting the sector.


     In their separate remarks, the President, Poultry Association of Nigeria, Chief Sunday Obiora, and the South-Western Chairman, Rev. Gideon Oluleye emphasised the importance of the poultry sector to the socio-economic development of the country, particularly in the area of employment generation and others, appealing to the government at all levels to provide long-term loan facility to farmers and increase in budgetary allocation to the agricultural sector.
