Abeokuta South LG Stops Helmet, Side Mirror, Others Fines, Terminates Contract of Necad Nerrow Management

The Legislative Council of Abeokuta South Local Government has announced the termination of its contract with Necad Nerrow Nigeria Limited, the management firm responsible for collecting Internal Generated Revenue (IGR) from commercial motorcyclists.

This decision follows allegations of extortion levelled against the company.

The Council had earlier suspended the collection of fines related to helmets, carrying more than one passenger, side mirrors on Monday and summoned key stakeholders, including representatives from the Amalgamated Commercial Owners and Riders Association of Nigeria (ACOMORAN), the Association of Motorcycles owners and Riders of Nigeria (AMORAN), Riders and Owners of Motorcycles Organisation (ROMO), the Arewa Motorcycles Riders Association, and Mr. Nurudeen Olayinka Adenuga of Necad Nerrow Nigeria Limited.

While representatives from ACOMORAN, AMORAN, ROMO, and the Hausa community were present at today's meeting, the management of Necad Nerrow Nigeria Limited reportedly failed to appear before the Legislative House.

In a statement personally signed by the Leader of the Legislative House, Hon. Ogundairo Jamiu and made available to journalists, the Council declared the immediate termination of the contract with Necad Nerrow Nigeria Limited. The statement emphasised that the suspension of fines on helmets and side mirrors remains in effect.

"Today, the following associations, AMORAN, ROMO, ACOMORAN, and Hausa Community, were present, but the management of Necad Nerrow Nigeria Limited refused to show up. Consequently, we have taken the decision that the contract between the association and the local government has been terminated, and the suspension of fines on helmets and side mirrors still remains intact," the statement read.

The Leader of the Legislative House further assured the public of the Council's commitment to their welfare, stating, "This is to let our people know that we are much concerned about their well-being, and we will do all our possible best to ensure the interest of the people in Abeokuta South are protected."

This move by the Abeokuta South Legislative Council signals a decisive action against the alleged exploitation of commercial motorcyclists and underscores their commitment to safeguarding the interests of the local populace.

Efforts to reach Necad Nerrow Nigeria Limited management for comments were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
