Lagos announces date for enforcement of ban on single use plastics

The Lagos State government has said that it will commence full enforcement of the ban on Single-Use-Plastics (SUPs) across the state.

The Commissioner for Environment for Lagos State, Tokunbo Wahab in a post on X said, from July 1, 2025, the use of such commodity would no longer be tolerated in the state.

According to Wahab, Lagos State has strategically been engaged in 18 months of dialogue and transitioning with producers and marketers of the products.

Speaking after a visit by the management of TETRA PAK West Africa Limited, Wahab said with the efforts put in place by the Lagos state government, now is the appropriate time to act with a view to save the environment.

He said, “This is about environmental responsibility. And we have given an ample time to align with global best practices. What is unacceptable elsewhere cannot become standard in Lagos. We must protect our future and do what is right for the greater good.

“We’re not here to score points. We’re here to do the work. Just like with the successful enforcement of the styrofoam ban, we will insist on accountability and responsibility. A cleaner, healthier Lagos is within reach if we all play our part,” Wahab stated.

Recall that there have been debates about the environmental condition of Lagos State with the commissioner engaging in a war of words with Nigerians who described Lagos as a smelly place.

The recent was between Wahab and Scott Iguma, a social media activist who recently described Lagos as a “smelly place” while speaking during a podcast.
