Benue attacks: It would have been better if Tinubu didn’t go – Dele Farotimi

A lawyer and human rights activist, Dele Farotimi has slammed President Bola Tinubu over his visit to Benue on Wednesday, June 18.

Farotimi on Thursday, June 19, said the president did not show concern over the plight of the people of Benue who had lost families in the attack by suspected armed herdsmen in Yelewata town of Gumu Local Government Area, Benue State.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Morning Brief, Farotimi said the only speaker who made a valuable point during the Stakeholders’ Town Hall meeting attended by President Tinubu was the Tor Tiv, His Royal Majesty James Ayatse.

According to Farotimi, the president’s remarks at the meeting were clearly made to create windows for his cronies and aides.

His words, “I must say very quickly that it would have been better if the president didn’t go.

“The only thing worthy of anybody’s time was the words of the Tor Tiv, who spoke extensively to the reality of the situation in the Benue trough and spoke eloquently to the pains of the victims.

“Other than that, all the president had to offer were mere windows into his preoccupation and what truly concerns his aides and assistants,” Farotimi noted.

Recall that President Tinubu had on Wednesday visited Makurdi, Benue State’s capital city.

He was in the state as part of his adjusted schedule to commiserate with the people of Benue on the devastating attack in Yelewata by suspected herdsmen.

The attack which led to the killing of over 200 people has been described as a well-calculated ethnic cleansing by leaders in the state.

While the president attended the stakeholders’ town hall meeting, he, however, said he could not make it to Yelewata because of bad roads and flooding.
