Reno Omokri to Atiku’s camp: I’ve never attacked you, don’t attack me

Reno Omokri has broken his silence over what he described as an “unwarranted attack” on him by allies of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, insisting he has never spoken ill of the PDP presidential candidate and remains loyal to the relationship they once shared.

In a statement posted on his official X account on Tuesday, Omokri, a former media aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, declared that while he now supports President Bola Tinubu, it is not out of malice or betrayal, but because Tinubu is implementing the very policies the PDP once championed.

There is absolutely no reason for those around Waziri Atiku Abubakar to fight with someone who only has the utmost respect for the former Vice President,” he said.

He pointed out that policies such as the removal of fuel subsidies, student loans, and devolution of power were long promoted by the PDP, and that Tinubu’s commitment to these ideals is the reason he has earned Omokri’s support.

“In my judgment, those who share a vision for Nigeria’s achievable greatness should support such a leader… it matters not if the party in power is APC or PDP, as long as it delivers progress,” he said.

Omokri disclosed that he has refrained from responding to jabs from Atiku’s camp out of respect, not cowardice, saying, “I will say to these people who do not understand how to disagree without being disagreeable that nobody profits from a mud fight.”

He warned Atiku to review the caliber of his media team, some of whom, he claimed, he recruited.

“Waziri Atiku Abubakar may want to think about the quality of media people he engages if they fight people who do not fight him,” he stated.

Omokri also clarified that his shift in allegiance is not without precedent, citing the 2014 realignment of political forces that saw PDP members back Buhari’s APC, adding that even then, Jonathan and his team “never attacked those who made such decisions.”

While he promised not to betray any confidential information from his time working closely with Atiku, Omokri made clear he would not be silenced.

“As for Peter Obi, nobody in Waziri Atiku’s media team is my peer, or big enough to stop me from saying what I want to say, when I want to say it, and how I want to say it,” he said.

He ended by reaffirming his respect for Atiku Abubakar, noting that he would endure the insults from the former VP’s camp without retaliation, in deference to their shared history.
