Former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, has described Senate President Godswill Akpabio as “the best thing to happen to the National Assembly since 1999.”
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Omokri praised Akpabio’s leadership, crediting him for what he termed the most impactful legislative achievement in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic, the passage of the Tax Reform Bill.
“This is the single most important legislation passed by Parliament since Nigeria returned to civil rule in 1999,” he said.
According to him, the bill is already expanding Nigeria’s tax base and increasing revenue generation across the country.
“Because of that statute, we are already seeing an explosion in revenue generation as Nigeria’s tax base expands,” Omokri said.
He added that the law introduces “wide-ranging reliefs for low-income earners, who will now pay little to no tax,” thereby easing the burden on Nigerian workers.
Omokri also applauded the passage of various regional development commission bills under Akpabio’s leadership, saying they have “accelerated development in Nigeria’s geopolitical zones by bypassing state bureaucracies.”
Omokri claimed that the unity between the National Assembly and the presidency has played a key role in the growth of the Nigerian economy.
“Thankfully, Nigeria’s economy has been debased. Our GDP is now at ₦372.8 trillion in 2024, up fromthe ₦314.02 trillion that President Tinubu met when he took over from General Buhari in 2023,” he said.
