Former Minister of Transportation and ex-Governor of Rivers State, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has been formally received by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the state.
It should be recalled that on July 2, opposition leaders selected the ADC as the platform for their coalition.
Amaechi arrived at the Port Harcourt International Airport to a cheering crowd of supporters who defied the rain to welcome him.
Upon his arrival, he was presented with the ADC’s party symbol and later addressed supporters both at the airport and the ADC state secretariat.
The former governor vowed to confront the alleged rigging culture in Rivers politics.
“Our state is notorious for writing results. We must stop them from writing results. They make noise after writing results,” he said.
In both the gubernatorial and presidential elections in Rivers, there were widespread allegations of rigging.
A BBC investigation found major discrepancies: official results gave APC’s Bola Tinubu over 100,000 extra votes and slashed Peter Obi’s Labour Party totals by more than 50,000, compared to polling‑station tallies. In Oyigbo LGA, Tinubu’s votes skyrocketed from 2,731 to 16,630, while Obi’s dropped from 22,289 to 10,784.
In the election, Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) got 231,593 votes, followed by Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP), who scored 175,071 votes. Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) came third in the state, polling 88,468 votes.
