A ValueJet CRJ-900ER aircraft came alarmingly close to striking Fuji music legend Wasiu Ayinde Marshall—known to fans as K1 De Ultimate—while taxiing on the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport apron on Tuesday.

A 23-second video shows the aircraft, bearing registration 5N-BXS, rolling forward even as K1 and ground handlers remained directly in its path. As the plane’s left wing swept past him, the singer instinctively ducked, narrowly escaping what could have been a deadly impact.

Dispute over a water flask

Airport insiders report that the incident stemmed from a disagreement over K1’s personal flask of water. Crew members insisted that only beverages provided aboard were permitted. Undeterred, the musician retorted, “Do you not know who I am?” When pressed to surrender the flask, he poured its contents onto the tarmac—some of which splashed onto crew members—prompting ground staff to remove him from the flight.

After the cabin doors were closed, K1 planted himself in front of the aircraft, declaring it would not depart without him.

All of a sudden the pilot started taxiing. The ground crew and K1 moved away from the nose of the plane to the side. As the wing got close to the musician, he had to quickly duck to avoid being hit. Then one of the ground crew members told him: “Wait now, wait now. “Sebi you strong? “Why you no wait?”

Licences suspended pending inquiry

In response to what it deemed a “serious breach of aviation safety protocols,” the NCAA has suspended the licences of Captain Oluranti Ogoyi and First Officer Ivan Oloba, effective immediately.

Michael Achimugu, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the NCAA, stated;

Preliminary findings suggest the crew commenced departure procedures without obtaining the mandatory pre-departure clearance, thereby endangering ground personnel and violating both national and international safety standards.

Investigators will now examine cockpit voice and flight-data recordings, interview the flight crew, and review airport surveillance footage.
