OGHA WADES IN ON ALLEGED MALTREATMENT OF SOME RESIDENTS OF BORDER COMMUNITIES BY IMMIGRATION OFFICIALS

Concerns by an alleged maltreatment of some residents of border communities, especially of Egun descent, who are indigenes of Ogun State by immigration officials, the State House of Assembly has taken step to seek the immediate intervention of the State Government and the management of Nigeria Immigration Service on the matter.

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide, requested the intervention shortly after a member representing Ipokia/ Idiroko State Constituency, Hon. Adebisi Oyedele, raised the matter under personal explanation, which was corroborated by his counterparts representing Ado-Odo/ Ota 2 State Constituency, Hon. Musefiu Lamidi and Yewa North 1 State Constituency Hon. Adegoke Adeyanju.

They reported the challenges being faced by some of the residents of border communities in their various constituencies in Ogun West Senatorial District in the hands of the Federal officials including difficulty in recognising the Egun people as Nigerians, and the issue of sales of fuel 20km from the land borders.

According to them, the residents who are of Egun descent, were being denied Nigerian passports despite meeting all application requirements.

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide, directed that there was need to look into the allegations of the maltreatment of the minority group in the State, saying " an injury to one is an injury to all".

He therefore requested an official engagement with the State Controller of Immigration and the State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to investigate the complaints and demand the State Government intervention to prevent further marginalisation caused through bureaucratic bottlenecks.

In a related development, the State Children's Parliament led a former lawmaker, who is also the State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Motunrayo Adijat Adeleye today joined the Assemblymen to observe the plenary preparatory to the Children's Parliament session slated for tomorrow Wednesday, 13th 2025 at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

Also at the plenary, a member representing Ijebu-East State Constituency, Hon. Waliu Owode drew the attention of the Assembly and the State to an incident in Imobi town; where an elephant from Omo Forest Reserve at Area J4 reportedly killed a farmer- Yaya Musa- Kalamu.

Responding, the Speaker assured that an on-the-spot assessment visit would be done to the site of the incident at a later date, while commiserating with the families of the victim and the residents of the area.
