The Nigerian Police Force has arrested and detained Former Presidential Candidate of African Action Congress, AAC, Omoyele Sowore.
This is according to a statement issued by the Party signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Femi Adeyeye.
The statement read;
SOWORE DETAINED: THE TINUBU REGIME HAS FINALLY GONE ROGUE ON DEMOCRATIC RIGHTS.
The African Action Congress (AAC) strongly condemns the arrest and harassment of our National Leader and Presidential Candidate in the 2023 election, Comrade Omoyele Sowore. The Tinubu regime, using the illegal Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, continues to manipulate the instruments of State to hound radical opposition voices such as our leader’s.
Sowore in his fight against oppression; for better welfare for all Nigerians including the rank and file Police officers and retirees, has continued to expose the illegality being perpetrated by Egbetokun and his allies in the Police Force with many evidential stories that border on gross corruption, wanton malfeasance, abuse of office and nepotism.
Recall that Sowore had honoured a suspicious police invitation on Tuesday, 6th August, 2025. On arrival to the very hostile Force Headquarters, he was denied access to the petition or name of the petitioner, both of which are his legal rights.
Instead, officers threatened to handcuff him, in clear contravention of the Anti-Torture Act, harassed his lawyers, and brought vehicles to whisk him away. It was later discovered that the petitioner is the illegal IGP himself. This is both shameful and unlawful.
The AAC sees this as a clear attack on democracy and an abuse of power, wherein the IG is appearing as both the petitioner and investigator.
Public resources are now being used to fight political opponents instead of securing lives and property. This can no longer be tolerated.
We are putting all Nigerians on notice, calling on every man and woman of conscience to be ready for a mass action. We will not hesitate to occupy Police Commands across the country until Sowore is released and justice is served. This regime will get the fierce resistance it so desires, very soon.
