President Bola Tinubu has approved the reduction in the cost of kidney dialysis sessions in federal hospitals from N50,000 to N12,000.

Daniel Bwala, spokesperson to the president, announced the development on Monday via a post on his X handle.

He said the initiative will begin in ten public hospitals before being expanded to federal medical centres and teaching hospitals across the country.

His words: “The development, which will first commence in ten public hospitals, will provide relief to thousands of Nigerians battling kidney-related diseases, many of whom cannot pay for the dialysis.

“More federal medical centres and teaching hospitals will be added before the end of the year to widen access nationwide.”

Bwala said the move is in line with Tinubu’s commitment to improving access to affordable healthcare.

He also recalled that the president had previously approved free caesarean sections for pregnant women in federal hospitals.

“It would be recalled that last year, President Tinubu also approved free cesarean sections (C-sections) for pregnant women in federal hospitals, a bold step aimed at boosting maternal healthcare and reducing preventable maternal deaths,” he added.
