The Presidency has ruled out the possibility of any Nigerian politician, including former President Goodluck Jonathan, defeating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.

Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, made the assertion during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday.

Reacting to growing calls for Jonathan to contest in 2027, Bwala dismissed the idea as politically unrealistic and potentially damaging to the former leader’s legacy.

“I see some unscrupulous elements trying to hoodwink former President Goodluck Jonathan into politics so they can destroy his reputation, which he has been building globally since leaving office,” Bwala said. “The southern Nigeria where Jonathan comes from has already turned to us. You have seen governors coming.”

He also questioned the sincerity of northern political figures backing Jonathan’s possible return, noting that some were key opponents during his presidency.

“The elements in the north asking him to run—were they not the ones who chased him away? What hope does he have that this time they mean well? The political class trying to cajole him into politics is not doing it in his interest. I believe President Jonathan is smarter than that,” he added.

Bwala stressed that Tinubu’s political standing remains unmatched, regardless of the opposition.

“But if President Jonathan decides to run, I will speak to facts, not conjecture: there is not a single politician in Nigeria today with the capacity to knock off President Bola Tinubu,” he declared.

The president is expected to seek a final four-year term in 2027.
