Beware of Fake Journalists in Ogun East Senatorial District — Ogun NUJ Alerts

The Ogun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) hereby alerts members of the public and the media community to the increasing activities of individuals posing as journalists in the Ogun East Senatorial District — particularly in Ijebu-Ode, Sagamu, and the entire Remo axis.

These impostors, masquerading as genuine media professionals, are engaging in unethical practices that tarnish the image of the journalism profession and could potentially endanger the public.

It has come to our attention that some of these individuals operate under the guise of protection from certain security operatives, especially the police, while falsely claiming to be journalists. Others openly parade themselves as members of the press without belonging to any accredited and recognized body such as the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) or its duly recognized affiliate in the region, the Ogun East Independent Chapel.

For clarity, the Ogun NUJ State Council recognizes only one officially constituted chapel in the Ogun East axis — the Ogun East Independent Chapel — which is solely empowered to oversee journalistic activities, identify legitimate practitioners, and recommend authentic members whenever verification is required.

Following the inauguration of the executive members of the Ogun East Independent Chapel, the State Council, in collaboration with the NUJ National Secretariat, has issued official identification cards to verified and accredited journalists operating within the Ogun East axis.

The Ogun NUJ therefore urges members of the public, the police, and other security agencies to verify the credentials of anyone claiming to be a journalist before granting access or sharing sensitive information.

Authentic journalists are expected to carry valid NUJ identification and adhere strictly to the ethical standards of the profession.

We also call on residents and community members to report any suspicious individuals or activities to the appropriate authorities.

The Ogun State NUJ remains committed to upholding the integrity of the journalism profession and will not hesitate to take decisive actions against anyone found impersonating journalists.

Together, let’s safeguard the sanctity of the media profession!
