Former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in the 2023 elections, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has reacted to reports of a rift between him and the Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf.
Speaking in an interview, Kwankwaso dismissed the rumours, stating that there was no disagreement between him, the governor, or any senior members of the state government, contrary to claims being spread by some politicians.
He explained that Governor Yusuf was selected based on merit and his long-standing loyalty to the Kwankwasiyya movement.
“There is no problem between me and Governor Abba. We gave him the opportunity to perform, and he is doing his best. It is just that some mischievous individuals are trying to create division where there is none,” Kwankwaso said.
“We carefully assessed our options and found him to be the most qualified as far back as 2019. We gave him the chance to deliver, and we continue to support him.
“Those claiming that I control contracts or run the government are only being mischievous. In due time, the truth will come out,” he added.
The statement comes amid months of speculation surrounding an alleged internal power struggle within the NNPP, following the emergence of a faction known as “Abba Tsaya da Kafarka” (Abba Stand on Your Feet).
The group, reportedly led by former Secretary to the State Government, Dr Baffa Bichi, and former Commissioner for Transport, Alhaji Salisu Digol, was believed to be advocating for greater independence in the governor’s decision-making, sparking concerns of tension between Yusuf and Kwankwaso.
