The Nigeria Police Force has accused Abduyari Lafia, a retired Assistant Inspector-General of Police, of corruption and forgery after his allegations against IGP Kayode Egbetokun.
Lafia had in a letter dated August 1, 2025, and addressed to Richard Mills, United States ambassador to Nigeria, accused Egbetokun of shielding Kumar Gurav, an Indian national accused of rape, from prosecution.
But the police dismissed the claims as “baseless and malicious”.
A senior police source, who asked not to be named, said the former AIG was only trying to discredit the IGP after being exposed for allegedly manipulating his service records to prolong his stay in office.
“Lafia cannot be trusted. He has been battling multiple corruption and misconduct cases in the force, and his credibility is already tainted,” the source said.
The source alleged that in 2021, while serving as Deputy Commissioner at the Force Intelligence Department, Lafia was indicted for diverting monetary exhibits worth ₦11.7 million and €30,200.
A disciplinary panel was said to have found him culpable and recommended his dismissal.
“He was dismissed but later reinstated because of high-level connections. Everyone in the force knows this story,” the source added.
The police source also said Lafia fabricated the obstruction allegations after Egbetokun uncovered discrepancies in his retirement records.
Documents showed his retirement date was originally January 1, 2025, but was later altered to December 31, 2025.
The discovery led to his suspension earlier this year.
A wireless message dated January 9, 2025, and signed by the force secretary, confirmed that the Police Service Commission (PSC) approved Lafia’s suspension and directed that his salary be stopped pending the outcome of his case before the force disciplinary committee.
Findings also showed that in 2017, while serving as Deputy Commissioner of Police under then-IGP Ibrahim Idris, Lafia absented himself from duty for more than three months without leave.
Despite being queried by the commandant of the police academy in Wudil, Kano state, he allegedly ignored the directive.
He was also accused of manipulating his entry date into the police force in a bid to extend his service years.
