World Food Day: Farmers Call for Collaboration Toward Sustainable Agricultural Practices

Farmers in Ijebuland have called for stronger collaboration among government, the private sector, and civil society to promote sustainable agricultural practices, ensure food security, and secure a better future for all.

This call was made during the celebration of World Food Day, organized by the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Ijebuland Chapter.

Speaking at the event, Chairman, AFAN Ijebuland,  Mr. Niyi Atooromola emphasized that achieving food security and a sustainable future requires collective effort across all sectors of society.

"To achieve food security and a better future, we must work hand in hand — collaborating across government, the private sector, academia, civil society, and within our communities,” he said.

Mr. Atooromola noted that Ijebuland is blessed with fertile soil, resilient people, and a long history of agricultural excellence .

“With the right policies, improved rural infrastructure, and the encouragement of agro-processing industries, we can transform these blessings into economic prosperity and food security — not just for Ogun State, but for Nigeria as a whole,” he added.

He further urged local government authorities to strengthen partnerships with farmers’ associations and to focus on building more farm-to-market roads, reviving irrigation systems, and expanding agricultural extension services to bring modern knowledge and technology directly to farmers’ fields.

Also speaking at the event, Hon. Dare Alebiosu, Chairman of Ijebu-Ode Local Government, described agriculture as the backbone of the nation’s economy and a vital part of its heritage.

“Agriculture remains not just a means of livelihood but the foundation of food security, youth empowerment, and sustainable development. As a government, we remain committed to supporting farmers through access to resources, modern techniques, and enabling infrastructure,” he said.

In his remarks, Hon. Kolawole Jamiu Adebukanla, Chairman of the House Committee on Agriculture, reiterated the importance of government support for farmers, describing them as the backbone of the nation.

"Farmers need more support from the government. They are the backbone of our nation’s economy and key to achieving sustainable food security,” he stated.
