Solar Sister Nigeria Distributes Over 2,000 Clean Cookstoves to Households in Ogun

Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State — Solar Sister Nigeria, in partnership with the Nigerian Energy Support Programme (NESP), the European Union (EU), German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), and the Federal Ministry of Power, has distributed 2,200 clean cookstoves to households across 80 communities in Ogun State.

The initiative, tagged “Clean Cooking Advocacy Initiative,” held at Rolak Hotel, Ijebu-Ode, aims to reduce household air pollution and promote climate resilience in last-mile communities.

In her welcome address, Mrs. Chioma Ome, Country Director of Solar Sister Nigeria, described the initiative as a remarkable step toward improving livelihoods, protecting the environment, and empowering women and families through access to clean energy solutions.

“Our approach combines economic opportunity, climate action, and gender equality — ensuring that no one is left behind in the transition to clean energy,” she said.

The Commissioner for Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr. Adebola Emmanuel Sofela, ably represented by Director, Industrial Promotion, Engr. Akintanmide Kehinde Olukayode, commended the programme initiative, describing it as a celebration of empowerment, innovation, and partnership.

He noted that women are taking center stage in the clean energy revolution, contributing to environmental sustainability and improving the economic and social well-being of families and communities across the state.

“This initiative, which involves the distribution of 2,200 clean cookstoves to 2,200 women across Ogun State at no cost, is both timely and strategic. It complements the Ogun State Government’s drive under the leadership of Prince Dapo Abiodun, Governor of Ogun State, to promote sustainable livelihoods, women’s inclusion, and environmental responsibility through innovative partnerships,” he stated.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Adijat Motunrayo Adeleye, represented by Mrs. Titilanu Amusan, emphasized that the clean cooking advocacy is not just about energy but also about women’s empowerment and sustainable development.

“Millions of women and children are exposed to smoke from firewood and charcoal, leading to serious health problems. The distribution of these clean cookstoves will help reduce household air pollution,” she noted.

In his remarks, Mr. Chimereze Nwosu, Advisor, Sustainable Energy Investment, Nigerian Energy Support Programme, highlighted the dangers of traditional cooking methods using firewood and charcoal.

He said the adoption of clean cookstoves would help reduce harmful emissions and promote a healthier, more sustainable environment.

Some beneficiaries, Mrs. Ifeyemi Omolara Abisoye and Mrs. Toyin Bello, expressed their appreciation to the organizers for the initiative and promised to make effective use of the clean cookstoves.
