As the world celebrates this year Yelutide season- Christmas and New Year, the Ogun State government has urged residents of the state and visitors alike to celebrate the season in a clean, healthy and safe environment.
Commissioner of Environment,Dr Ola Oresanya gave the charge in a statement in Abeokuta to mark the festive season.
While wishing all Christians and all residents of the state a Merry Christmas and a prosperous 2026,Oresanya urged them to make cleanliness of the environment their watchword by cleaning their surroundings and store their waste in covered containers for onward collection by the Waste PSP Operators assigned to their areas who have been mandated to work throughout this festive period
"All PSP Operators in the state have been mandated to work round-the-clock throughout this festive period to collect wastes in their assigned areas for effective waste management especially with expected increase in waste generation from the celebration"
"Aside from this, all government waste management equipments with environmental officials have been deployed to various parts of the state to complement the efforts of the PSP operators in this "Special End -Of -The-Year Duties" geared towards maintaining clean environment statewide"
"So residents of the state and visitors are therefore assured of government's readiness to continue to maintain the clean environment the state is noted for at all times as I urge our people to play their part by cooperating with them for this operation"
For traders,Oresanya called on them to transact their businesses in clean, healthy and safe environment especially at this period when upsurge in trading activities are expected in all markets and supermarkets urging them not to engage in street trading as Environment Marshalls will also be on duty to maintain law and order in all markets and public places statewide .
He did not forget to tell "emergency traders" who trade in livestock and other items who display them on roadsides, median or in the booths of their vehicles and other public places statewide to desist and move to markets near them as there are enough space to accommodate them adding that the state government will aside from seizing their goods sentence them to community services for destroying the aesthetic beauty of the state through their illegal street trading.
Oresanya also urged motorists to drive with caution to avoid unnecessary accidents during this festive season as street sweepers will be on duty statewide to keep the state roads clean and called on carnival organizers not to block any street roads for their celebration as the state's environmental laws forbids blocking of state roads for parties and carnivals.
He therefore wishes all a fun-filled celebration in a clean, healthy and safe environment.
