Rivers politics may witness a major twist today as lawmakers in the Amaewhule-led faction of the State House of Assembly are reportedly preparing to announce their defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The planned move, which political insiders say could happen this morning, has triggered fresh tension across the state’s politics.
According to POLITICS NIGERIA, the lawmakers have been holding discreet meetings ahead of the announcement.
Sources close to the development claim the planned defection is tied to ongoing political shifts involving the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
According to those advancing this narrative, Wike’s camp has been under intense pressure following what they describe as a decline in his influence within Abuja’s power structure.
They argue that recent events at the national level have weakened his long-held political weight, creating uncertainty among his loyalists in Rivers State.
Some political actors insist the Presidency has started reassessing its expectations ahead of future elections, with suggestions that Governor Siminalayi Fubara may be gaining increased attention from key players.
They claim this change has unsettled Wike’s allies, sparking fears of losing relevance if the political tide continues to shift.
These insiders also allege that concerns have grown within Wike’s circle that the governor might be exploring new political alignments of his own.
One of the sources pushing this narrative said the camp believes Fubara could be considering “a possible move toward the APC,” a rumour that has reportedly created further panic among Wike’s supporters.
It is this fear, according to the circulating narrative, that is driving the Amaewhule lawmakers to act quickly.
Supporters of the theory say the legislators want to position themselves as valuable stakeholders in the evolving power structure and avoid being left behind.
As at the time of filing this report, no formal statement has been made by the lawmakers or the APC.
However, information from Port Harcourt say the atmosphere has been unusually charged since yesterday night, as many await confirmation of the planned movement.
If the defection eventually takes place, it would mark one of the most dramatic political shifts in Rivers State in recent months and could deepen the ongoing rivalry between Wike and Governor Fubara.
