The Ogun State Government has ordered the immediate suspension of the Awujale of Ijebuland succession process.
The directive was conveyed in a letter dated January 21, 2026, and signed by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Ganiu Hamzat. The letter directed that all activities relating to the selection of a new Awujale be halted until further notice.
On Wednesday, activities at the Awujale Palace in Ijebu-Ode continued as normal; however, no succession-related engagements were held at the palace.
The suspension letter, addressed to the Chairman of Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area, cited concerns that recent steps taken in the succession process were not in accordance with the declaration guiding the Awujale stool. It added that the decision was taken in the interest of peace and public order.
