Launch of IITA-Supported Tilapia Cage Culture Program in Ifo LGA Strengthens Aquaculture Development in Ogun State

Ifo, Ogun State – April 15, 2026.

The Ogun State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to agricultural transformation and food security with the successful launch of the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA)-supported Tilapia Cage Culture Program, implemented by CAP Farmers in Ifo Local Government Area.

The event brought together key stakeholders from the Ogun State Ministry of Agriculture, the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, IITA, security agencies, farmer groups, community leaders, students, and members of the press.

Speaking at the event, the Special Adviser on Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Angel Adelaja-Kuye, described the initiative as a strategic step toward boosting fish production, enhancing food security, and creating sustainable livelihoods for farmers across the state.

She highlighted the importance of adopting innovative aquaculture practices such as cage culture technology, which allows farmers to maximize available water resources, increase productivity, and operate more efficiently within the fisheries value chain.

As part of her support for the initiative, Dr. Adelaja-Kuye announced a ₦250,000 grant to CAP Farmers to further strengthen the implementation and expansion of the program.

She also called on youths and women to embrace agriculture as a viable and profitable enterprise, emphasizing the need to explore opportunities across the entire agricultural value chain, including production, processing, packaging, and marketing.

“The future of agriculture lies in innovation, collaboration, and value addition. Agriculture is not just a means of livelihood—it is a business with vast opportunities for wealth creation,” she stated.

The Tilapia Cage Culture Program aligns with the broader vision of the Ogun State Government under the leadership of His Excellency, Prince Dapo Abiodun, CON, to build a modern, inclusive, and productive agricultural sector. Through ongoing initiatives such as the Ogun State Economic Transformation Project (OGSTEP), the state has supported thousands of farmers with inputs, technical training, and infrastructure to boost agricultural productivity and incomes.

The partnership with IITA further underscores the importance of collaboration between government, research institutions, and farmer organizations in driving sustainable agricultural development.

CAP Farmers were commended for their leadership and commitment to innovation in aquaculture, while IITA was appreciated for its continued technical support and contributions to agricultural advancement in Ogun State.

The Ogun State Government reiterated its commitment to supporting initiatives that enhance local food production, create employment opportunities, and improve the livelihoods of its citizens.
