Sons and daughters of Omu, both at home and in the diaspora, gathered in high spirits on Saturday, April 4, 2026, for the 34th edition of the annual Omu Eleni Day celebration. The colourful cultural fiesta, which promotes unity and community development, took a memorable turn when indigenes openly adopted Senator Otunba Gbenga Daniel (OGD) as their preferred candidate for the Ogun East Senatorial seat in the next election.
In a warm gesture of appreciation, a birthday cake was cut to celebrate in advance the 70th birthday of Senator Otunba Gbenga Daniel (OGD), who is widely regarded as a son of the soil.
The Obas, Community leaders, Clubs and Associations, indigenes and other residents praised his outstanding contributions to the development of Ogun East, highlighting his consistent performance in public service and dedication to the welfare of the people.
Speaking during the occasion, participants explained that their support for Senator Gbenga Daniel stems from his deep roots in the area and his proven track record. They noted that while they hold the current Governor in high esteem, he hails from the Remo area and is therefore not considered an indigene of Omu. This decision, they said, aligns perfectly with the Yoruba adage, “Omo eni o ni se idi bebere ka fi ileke si idi omo elomi” – a saying that emphasises the importance of cherishing and supporting one’s own.
The endorsement was made with joy and unity, reflecting the strong bond between Senator Gbenga Daniel and the Omu community.
The celebration ended on a note of renewed commitment to progress, with many expressing confidence that his continued representation will bring even greater development to Ogun East.
The 34th Omu Eleni Day once again demonstrated the power of culture in strengthening community ties and guiding political choices based on performance, loyalty, and shared heritage.
