Almost four months after the Ogun State Government suspended the selection process for a new Awujale of Ijebuland, the Fusengbuwa Ruling House of Ijebu-Ode has appealed to Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, for the resumption of the selection process.
The Fusengbuwa Ruling House made the appeal during a press conference well attended by senior members of the family, including the Chairman of the Ruling House, Otunba Lateef Owoyemi, the Deputy Chairman, Otunba Adedokun Ajidagba, the Vice-Chairman, Professor Fassy Yusuf, the secretary, Pastor Bola Salami, among others.
Chairman of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House, Otunba Owoyemi, who addressed the press conference, lamented the long delay in the Awujale selection process since it's suspension on January 21, 2026, saying that all sons and daughters of Ijebu land "continue to yearn for the timely emergence of a new (and 60th) Awujale and Paramount Ruler".
Otunba Owoyemi also criticised the reason for the delay, noting that the state government acted "on allegations of bribery and financial inducement, which the Ruling House had never heard anything about", adding that the letter by the state government suspending the process "did not name any persons that made the allegations, the givers of the alleged bribes, and on which date each one was given, or their values".
Otunba Owoyemi refuted claims that there had been bribery in the process, and said "none of the Olori Ebis of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House, and the Kingmakers of the Awujale Kingmakers Council who had been summoned to answer questions at the Ogun Police Command headquarters, had been found culpable of the alleged crimes".
Otunba Owoyemi added that the petition by the Ogun State Commissioner of Chieftancy Affairs, Hon. Ganiyu Hamzat to the Ogun State Police Command "lacked any element capable of substantiation through any honest and reliable witness".
The Chairman of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House insisted that the ongoing delay in the selection process for a new Awujale "is in the Ruling House's honest opinion over speculative, unproven, or unproven allegations and frivolous petitions from persons who do not wish the Fusengbuwa Ruling House well and would like to sabotage the entire Awujale selection process".
Otunba Owoyemi stated that the late Awujale, Oba Sikiru Adetona "carefully appointed the Kingmakers in accordance with very ancient traditions", as they were "people he had carefully studied over several years and personally understood their character, and trusted implicitly...confident that they would shoulder the solemn dirty with honour, fairness, courage, and dignity".
Otunba Owoyemi highlighted that the Kingmakers"had not been found wanting", and appealed to the state government to disregard the unproven allegations of financial inducement and bribery, to restore the Awujale selection process"without any more delay".
