OGIRS MOVES AGAINST DEFAULTERS IN CAR DEALERSHIP SECTOR

Ogun State Internal Revenue Service (OGIRS) has commenced enforcement against tax defaulters in the car dealership sector across the Abeokuta zone to ensure compliance with tax laws, recover outstanding tax liabilities and encourage voluntary compliance among the dealers.

This was disclosed by the Executive Chairman (OGIRS), Mr. Olugbenga Olaleye, during an enforcement exercise carried out at various locations within the Abeokuta axis, noting that revenue generation was crucial for funding government projects and delivering essential services to residents of the State.

The Chairman, represented by the Director of Other Taxes, Mrs. Oluyomi Dawodu, stated that the exercise was aimed at promoting fairness among taxpayers, boosting Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and discouraging tax evasion.

He stressed that the Agency was responsible for ensuring compliance with tax obligations and that dealership numbers must be used strictly for their intended purposes, stating that every vehicle dealer must possess a valid dealership number and registration number issued by the Ogun State Government.

“Car dealers must be law-abiding and ensure compliance with the rules and regulations governing road traffic and vehicle dealership operations,” he said.

The Chairman, urged defaulters who were yet to register with the State government to comply and regularise their tax status before the commencement of the enforcement effort.

Also speaking, Head, Dealership Unit (OGIRS), Mr. Nicholas Abiola, expressed displeasure over the attitude of some dealers who had failed to fulfil their tax obligations, revealing that some operators were still hiding and evading compliance, assuring that the full weight of the law would soon catch up with them, just as he notified that the enforcement exercise would soon move to other parts of the State till all outstanding taxes are recovered.
