The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun-East Independent Chapel, has met with the Ijebu-Ode Police Area Commander, ACP Yusuf Wasiu, to strengthen collaboration in curbing fake journalism in the district.
The delegation was led by Chapel Chairman, Comrade Oluseun Oduneye, accompanied by the Secretary, Comrade Olufunmilayo Suleodu Adewoju, and members of a newly constituted task force set up to combat fake journalism in the Ogun-East Senatorial District.
Speaking at the meeting, Oduneye stressed the urgent need to address the menace of fake journalism, describing it as a threat to the nation at all levels.
“We are here today to establish a working relationship and to introduce the new Chapel to the Police authorities in Ogun-East. This is a call to action against fake journalism in our region. It is our pleasure to present our task force team to the Ijebu-Ode Police Area Command.
"This effort aligns with the directive from the state council to join hands in tackling fake journalists, and we are ready to begin arresting anyone found with fake identification.”
Introducing the task force, Oduneye noted that the team would help ensure professional standards among journalists operating in the area.
In his response, ACP Yusuf Wasiu pledged full cooperation, revealed that he was once a journalist with Tempo magazine before joining the police force.
“Fake news on social media has become a serious issue for all of us. We are ready to fight this battle together, you have my support at all levels.”
Also speaking, the Chapel Secretary, Comrade Olufunmilayo Suleodu Adewoju, and Task Force Chairman, Comrade Dairo Johnson, thanked the commander for his support in the union’s drive to eliminate fake journalism within Ogun-East, particularly in Ijebuland.
