A 47-year-old member of the House of Representatives, Abdussamad Dasuki has announced his decision to step down from his re-election bid in 2027.
Dasuki, who represents Kebbe/Tambuwal Federal Constituency of Sokoto State, in a statement issued on Sunday said, he has decided not to seek re-election to pave the way for younger generations to take on leadership roles.
He described his choice as a personal sacrifice, especially having experienced the privilege to serve in the State House of Assembly, the House of Representatives, and in the State Executive Council.
According to Dasuki, his decision stems from his belief that the Nigerian system of governance and leadership process must evolve to reflect the needs and dreams of the future generation.
“I have decided not to seek reelection to the House of Representatives in the 2027 general election.
“This decision is not born out of fatigue, nor is it born out of disillusionment. It is borne out of a higher calling – one that transcends ambition or position. It is a decision rooted in belief, in hope, in a future we all desire to see. It is a personal sacrifice, a deliberate response to the noble call sounded by a project I helped birth, a cause I deeply believe in – the Future is Now Project,” Dasuki said.
Citing the communique released during the unveiling of the Future Is Now Project at the celebration of the 65th Independence Day, the lawmaker said a meaningful inclusion of young Nigerians in governance process is paramount.
“And as the interim chairman and a promoter of this youth advocacy initiative, I cannot in good conscience ignore the message we put forward. Among many bold resolutions, we committed to ensuring that 70 per cent of House of Representatives seats are occupied by young Nigerians under 40 years of age in the next general election. I am still a youth by all standards, but I have crossed that 40-year threshold we have proposed for the House of Representatives.
“I am of the strong conviction that if we are to give meaning to our words, if we are to inspire the trust and belief of the generation coming after us, then we must be willing to sacrifice, pay a heavy price, bear a burden,” he added.
To members of his constituency, Dasuki said he remains committed to community development at all levels and will continue to champion the cause of education for all Nigerian children and the protection of young women and girls.
Noting that while the road ahead might not be an easy one, Dasuki assured the people that he will continue to canvas for policies that are people-oriented and
“As I step aside, I wish to bequeath a new legacy in Nigeria’s political history, one that showcases a crop of leaders who know when to exit, paving the way for a fresher generation; youth with the energy and vision to reengineer our country’s future. Serving you has been the greatest honour of my life,” Dasuki said.
