OVER 2,000 OGUN WOMEN BENEFIT FROM SOLAR STOVES




No fewer than 2000 Women across 80 Communities in Ogun have benefited from the distribution of Solar Cook Stoves aim at reducing household air pollution and promote climate resilience in Communities.

 The initiative,  which was tagged: ‘Clean Cooking Advocacy Initiative, organised by Solar Sister Nigeria, at Ijebu-Ode,  in partnership with the Nigerian Energy Support Programme (NESP), European Union (EU), German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) as well as the Federal Ministry of Power.

Speaking, Commissioner for Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr. Adebola Emmanuel Sofela, represented by Director, Industrial Promotion, Engr. Akintanmide Olukayode, commended the programme initiative, describing it as a celebration of empowerment and partnership.

He noted that women should take centre stage in the clean energy revolution, contributing to environmental sustainability and improving the economic and social well-being of families and communities across the State.

“This initiative, which involves the distribution of 2,000 clean cook stoves to women across Ogun State at no cost, is both timely and strategic. It complements the Ogun State Government’s drive under the leadership of Prince Dapo Abiodun, Governor of Ogun State, to promote sustainable livelihoods, women’s inclusion and environmental responsibility through innovative partnerships,” he stated.

Also speaking, her counterpart in the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Adijat Adeleye, represented by Mrs. Titilanu Amusan, emphasised that the clean cooking advocacy was not only aimed at promoting clean energy but also to ensure women’s empowerment and sustainable development.

“Millions of women and children are exposed to smoke from firewood and charcoal, leading to serious health problems. The distribution of these clean cook stoves will help reduce household air pollution,” she noted.

In her welcome address, Country Director of Solar Sister Nigeria, Mrs. Chioma Ome, described the initiative as a remarkable step toward improving livelihoods, protecting the environment and empowering women and families through access to clean energy solutions.

“Our approach combines economic opportunity, climate action and gender equality ensuring that no one is left behind in the transition to clean energy,” she added.

In his remarks, Advisor, Sustainable Energy Investment, Nigerian Energy Support Programme, Mr. Chimereze Nwosu, highlighted the dangers of traditional cooking methods using firewood and charcoal.

He said the adoption of clean cook stoves would help reduce harmful emissions and promote a healthier, more sustainable environment

Responding, two of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Ifeyemi Omolara Abisoye and Mrs. Toyin Bello, expressed their appreciation to the organisers for the initiative promising to make effective use of the cook stoves.
