ADC Calls For Removal Of Senate President Akpabio

● Says Nigeria's Democracy Under Siege

The African Democratic Congress (ADC), Ogun State Chapter, has called for the resignation of the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio.

According to the ADC, Akpabio's record of controversy, lawlessness and legislative tyranny is becoming a danger to Nigeria's democracy.

The party posited that Nigeria's democracy is under seige not by foreign forces, but the reckless excesses, unchecked arrogance, and authoritarian disposition of the Senate President.

This was contained in a statement by the state chairman of ADC, Otunba Dr. Femi Soluade, a copy made available to newsmen in Abeokuta, on Saturday.

Soluade stated that Akpabio's public credibility had long been burdened by the cloud of scandals trailing his time as Minister supervising the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

A copy of the statement obtained by BEYOND AFRICA reads: "The Senate President’s public credibility has long been burdened by the cloud of scandals trailing his time as Minister supervising the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). Nigerians will recall, with deep concern, that this period was characterized by:

"Explosive national revelations surrounding alleged mismanagement of hundreds of billions of naira meant for the development of the Niger Delta.

"The infamous COVID-19 intervention scandal, where emergency funds were reportedly shared under questionable circumstances while the region remained impoverished.

"Allegations of contract racketeering, financial recklessness, and institutional collapse under his watch.

"Multiple probes, counter-allegations, and public testimonies that exposed a system drowning in corruption and impunity.

"These allegations were never conclusively addressed in a manner that restored public confidence. Instead, Nigeria was left with unanswered questions and a dangerous message: that political power can bury accountability."

FROM CONTROVERSY TO TYRANNY AS SENATE PRESIDENT

"Rather than showing remorse, reform, or statesmanship upon assuming the exalted office of Senate President, he has chosen a path of legislative dictatorship:

"Blatant abuse of Senate Standing Rules to silence opposing voices.

"Unconstitutional suspension of senators, carried out with impunity and without due process.

The systematic intimidation of lawmakers who dare to question his authority.

"Reduction of the Nigerian Senate into a personal fiefdom where dissent is punished and obedience is enforced.

"Open contempt for democratic norms, dialogue, and institutional restraint.

This is not leadership.

This is legislative tyranny."

AN IMMINENT THREAT TO DEMOCRATIC ORDER

"When the Senate President becomes the embodiment of lawlessness within the legislature, democracy itself trembles. When due process is discarded and power is centralized in one individual, Nigeria begins a dangerous slide toward authoritarianism.

"History teaches us that democracies do not collapse overnight — they are destroyed when good people remain silent while institutions are hijacked.

Silence is no longer an option.

ADC DEMANDS IMMEDIATE IMPEACHMENT

"On behalf of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Ogun State Chapter, and in alignment with millions of Nigerians who believe in accountability, justice, and constitutionalism, I unequivocally demand:

"An immediate, independent, and transparent investigation into all allegations arising from his tenure at the NDDC.

"A full legislative ethics inquiry into his conduct as Senate President.

"His impeachment and removal as Senate President to prevent further damage to Nigeria’s democracy.

"Nigeria deserves a Senate President with integrity, humility, and respect for democratic values — not one whose leadership deepens division, fear, and institutional decay.

"No man is indispensable.

No office is a shield against accountability.

Nigeria must come first."
